OLED is good, but LGD has made some mistakes

Reviewing the development of the color TV industry, every upgrade of the display technology will bring about changes in the industrial structure. However, no matter how the situation changes, the Korean brands Samsung and LG are the leading group in terms of both panel and machine.

The same as the Korean brand, the two sides in parallel in the LCD era parallel, but now to the development of new technologies for flat panel display technology, Samsung and LG have had major differences.

Samsung advocates continuing to deepen the LCD market and continue to upgrade LCDs through technologies such as quantum dots. LG, however, advocates the rapid development of OLEDs to reduce the life cycle of LCDs.

As a result, we have seen two distinct factions in the industry:

One is the LCD school represented by Samsung. In addition to Samsung Display (Panel Business Company) and Samsung Electronics, the domestic giants Hisense and TCL are the core strengths. The former is developing the ULED TV with independent research and development of LCD upgrade technology while laying out the laser TV. The latter is similar to Samsung. Push Quantum TV.

The second is OLED represented by LG. In addition to LGD (panel business company) and LG Electronics, domestic giant Skyworth is a hardcore ally. The reason why Skyworth promotes OLED is that, besides promising OLED is the development direction of next-generation TV, the participation of LGD's panel production line in China is also one of the reasons.

From the current point of view, Samsung seems to be even more dominant. After all, among the top five color TV manufacturers in the global sales volume, three belong to the LCD camp. The OLED core forces currently only see LGD and Skyworth.

Xiao Bian believes that from a technical point of view, the current OLED technology and the upgraded version of the LCD technology in fact have their own advantages and disadvantages, can well meet the needs of consumers nowadays. However, when technology is transformed into a product and it gains a dominant position in the market, it does not simply rely on technological superiority. In that case, plasma was lost to liquid crystals. This is an example.

OLEDs undoubtedly represent a new generation of display technology, and there is also ample room for imagination on the big screen. But why did the panel leader LGD push, but the respondent was paralyzed? Xiao Bian believes that in the promotion of OLED, LGD still made some mistakes.

One is prematurely opposing OLEDs with liquid crystals. In fact, LCD technology has its own reasonable life cycle, from the current point of view, LCD has not yet reached the point of rapid demise. Regardless of the ULED in the backlight partition, or the introduction of quantum dot technology, it is proved that the LCD still has a long life cycle. To push OLED too early, it is very easy to oppose the two at the industrial and market level, causing LCD panel counterparts and color TV machine business concerns. After all, panel companies such as Samsung, BOE, and China Star Optoelectronics, and the panel production lines that they have invested heavily in, cannot be put into the OLED layout in batches before a reasonable return on investment can be achieved.

A more reasonable approach is to continue to focus on liquid crystals at this stage. OLEDs will be created as high-end products targeted at high-end people and form a brand potential energy. When liquid crystal technology is iteratively sluggish, it will quickly spread.

The second is that there is no wider industrial alliance. Compared with Samsung's display, LGD, which is a panel giant, has done relatively poorly in this area. In order to popularize the surface LCD, Samsung recently joined more than 20 terminal companies to form curved camps and develop curved LCDs. When LGD promoted OLED, in addition to Skyworth, Hisense and TCL did not join the two complete machine companies. Konka, Changhong, and a large number of Internet TV brands also belong to the LCD camp. Rarely do they promote OLED products.

Samsung has united a large number of downstream terminal enterprises, but LGD has few allies, which is detrimental to the future development of OLED. This situation is similar to the dispute between LCD and plasma. Although plasma technology appears to be more advantageous than LCD in many industry players, only Panasonic and Changhong companies are pushing the globe. Most panels and entire machines Businesses support liquid crystals, causing plasma eventually disappeared. Therefore, the advantage of technology is not necessarily the decisive factor for success, and the number of allies has a key role in the formation of market leadership.

Of course, for LGD, no matter what mistakes have been made, betting OLED is already impossible to look back. In terms of investment layout, LGD has spent a lot of money. Recently, LGD announced that it will invest 1.99 trillion won to build a new six-generation flexible OLED production line at the Paju Plant in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. Previously, LGD has established a 4.5-generation flexible OLED panel production line E2 in Paju, South Korea. At the same time, it is building a 6th-generation line E5 at Gumi Plant in Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. In addition, it also announced that it will invest more than 10 trillion won in South Korea's Paju to establish a new P10 plant for OLED panel production, producing a wide range of OLED products including large-size OLED panels and flexible OLED panels.

Xiao Bian believes that although LGD made some mistakes, large-size OLEDs still have huge room for development, and they will not be able to follow the old path of plasma. After all, LGD and Skyworth, the two giants of the body too much weight, confidence and decision are also very large, and many panel companies have begun to develop OLED after the LCD, such as the BOE BOE, the largest domestic panel has also been in the layout of large-size OLED panel line, And a small amount of production.
