OLED lighting grabs market LG Chem launches new project in Korea

According to PR Newswire, LG Chem, the world's largest OLED lighting manufacturer, today announced an OLED lighting partnership with the Seoul National University's new library. LG Chem has installed 1,100 lighting panels for reading lights in Korea's top universities, the Crown Library, which is by far the world's largest OLED architectural lighting installation.

Seoul National University of Korea used OLED lighting as a reading light for libraries, mainly because it is not only energy efficient but also provides comfortable light for people's eyes. OLED lighting is closer to natural light than any other source, and does not emit ultraviolet light that increases eye strain and blue lines that can cause eye damage. Another reason why the university officially adopts OLED lighting is that its lightness and modern design are more in line with the library's cutting-edge architecture. As the only surface light source on the market, OLED lighting panels are ideal for a variety of design applications.

The Seoul National University Library Manager said: “In order to avoid the eye fatigue of students, lighting is the most important consideration in library facilities. OLED is the best lighting choice in the library learning area because it protects the eyes. It also has a simple design. LG Chem's technological leadership in the field of lighting is also one of the important reasons why we chose this company's lighting products."

Park Sung-Soo, head of LG's OLED lighting business, said: "The adoption of OLED lighting panels by the Seoul National University Library is a recognition of the advantages of OLED lighting. LG Chem plans to officially launch this in March. OLED lighting panels installed at Seoul National University, and OLED lighting fixtures called 'Frame' have been sold online. This is an effort by LG Chem to create a new customer experience through OLED lighting products."

The OLED lighting panel installed at the Seoul National University Library is 320 mm x 110 mm, with a luminous rate of 60 lm/W and a service life of 40,000 hours. According to the Korean standard lighting indicator data, the standard brightness range of the reading lamp is 300lx (lux, lighting unit) to 600lx, and the illumination brightness of the OLED lighting panel can be easily adjusted between 300lx and 850lx.

The OLED lighting panel has an ultra-thin design with a thickness of only 0.88 mm, which is only 2.2 mm thick even in the case of an aluminum alloy case.

Minister Park Sheng-yu said that the Seoul University Library OLED lighting project is a milestone in the global promotion of the OLED lighting industry. According to data from UBI Research, a professional consulting firm, sales in the OLED lighting industry will grow rapidly and are expected to reach $4.7 billion by 2020.
