Philips ranked more than 30% of the third patent patents for European patent applications in 2013

Recently, the European Patent Office (EPO) held a press conference to inform the 2013 European patent application. According to EPO, in 2013, the total number of patent applications filed by all global companies in Europe ranked third, with a total of 1,839 patent applications filed, a year-on-year increase of 59%. In 2012, Philips ranked 12th.

Among them, more than 30% of the patents applied by Philips are related to lighting, and 40% of the patents applied for medical care. Philips now has 64,000 patents, 93,000 design rights, 46,000 trademarks and 4,700 domain names. The top 25 companies in the global rankings including the Lighting Division include General Electric, Samsung and LG, but it is not clear how the proportion of lighting patents in total patents.

Philips' compulsory rights protection for patents has also been criticized. Recently, French OEMs have stated that Philips' implementation of its intellectual property rights is “aggressive”. The company claims that he had received a letter from Philips warning that some of his products infringe Philips' intellectual property rights before being invited to join the Philips licensing program.

The company's managing director, who declined to be named, said: "Our LED products are likely to infringe Philips' patents for protection because of their close proximity. Philips' royalty system requires about 5% of the products sold."

Bjrn Teuwsen, Communications Director of Philips Intellectual Property and Standards Department, said: "So far, our approximately 220 inventions and licensing programs cover more than 1,400 patents and patent applications. More than 380 authorized companies worldwide, we have never claimed All LED products require our license, and we are willing to reach a consensus with other companies to charge royalties on the manufacture or sale of Philips patented products that are characteristic of the product. Philips is helping to drive and create an open environment. In addition, Philips not only develops and sells technology, but also shares its intellectual property with other players. Finally, we strongly encourage companies to work with us to share patent licenses."
