Tesla Announces Recall of 53,000 Vehicle Parking Brakes

[Netease Smart News April 21 news] Tesla is recalling 53,000 vehicles to solve the parking brake problem caused by production defects. The car maker pointed out that the recall was a "voluntary" initiative because it had already determined that the Model S and Model X models produced from February to October 2016 included a small device, and that third-party suppliers might not Made according to the correct process.

Tesla said that less than 5% of the recalled vehicles may be affected, and the time needed to replace the brakes is only 45 minutes. The recall involved 63% of the 84,000 cars produced by Tesla in 2016. The company stated that although there were no accidents or casualties related to brake failure, the company stated that they still maintain a high degree of caution and intend to "proactively replace these components to ensure that there will be no problems."

Tesla explained that if there is a problem with the gear, the brakes on the car will cause the car to move. Tesla explained: “At present, there has been no report on the parking brake system's failure to control the parking, and there is no case of being unable to stop in an emergency. This part has no effect on the vehicle’s conventional braking system. We also determined that Only a small part of the vehicles built during this period used inappropriate parts."

At the time of the recall, Tesla remained close to GM’s market value, but the latter remained the highest-valued car manufacturer in the United States. Tesla is currently seeking to expand its production scale to meet the much-needed demand for Model 3. The new car will be put into production this year and it is expected that new bookings will be delivered by mid-2018 or later - depending on the country of delivery.

Some analysts are skeptical of Tesla's rapid rise in stock prices because the company’s car sales are still only a fraction of GM or Ford. In the midday trade, Tesla's share price fell 1.1% to US$302.24 per share. The market value was approximately US$50.1 billion, which was US$1.2 billion lower than the market value of General Motors.

Although this mistake may damage the company's reputation, this is not the first time it has recalled thousands of cars. Just last year, Tesla recalled 2,700 Model X cars in the United States because of problems with the lock on the third row of seats.

Tesla said that they will soon send a formal recall notice to the affected owners by mail and will immediately start replacing parts - the company plans to replace parts for all affected vehicles by October 2017.
