This solution can eliminate the need for air conditioning. The energy use rate (PUE) approaches the theoretical limit of 1.0.

This is the first public display of the "Kirin" data center solution. This extremely low-energy technology solution will be applied to Alibaba Cloud Services, and will also become an important foundation for Alibaba's NASA plan, providing computing capacity for the next 20 years.

Using the principle of heat exchange, Alibaba engineers completely immersed the server in a special type of coolant. The high-speed computing server generates a large amount of heat and can be directly absorbed by the coolant into the external cooling. The energy consumption for heat dissipation is almost zero. . In a traditional data center, almost half of the power consumed is dissipated.

Liquid cooling is an extremely efficient cooling method, but it is the first time that it has been used in commercial server clusters. Alibaba Cloud scientists overcame the challenges in server systems, refrigeration systems, and cooling materials, achieving zero noise, zero pollution, green energy, and support for server clusters with power consumption exceeding 200 kW.

Thanks to submerged liquid-cooled and highly efficient heat dissipation efficiency, “Kylin” can be deployed anywhere without fan, air-conditioning, and other large-scale refrigeration equipment. It saves more than 75% of space, and its computational capacity per unit volume is 10 times higher than in the past. The tightness also keeps the components away from the effects of humidity, dust, and vibration. The interference is almost zero. At the same time, this special liquid is completely insulated and non-corrosive. Even if the components are submerged for more than 20 years, no change will occur in the components. It will not have any effect on electronic components.

IDC expects to generate 40ZB of data by 2020. At the same time, by 2024, data center power consumption will account for more than 5% of the entire society's power consumption. The traditional air-cooling becomes more and more powerless. The appearance of "Kylin" breaks the constraints of energy consumption on the data center. The energy use efficiency (PUE) approaching 1.0 can allow the power to exert its maximum computing power.

At present, "Kirin" has passed preliminary tests and verifications, and will provide computing services through Alibaba Cloud.

As an important part of Alibaba's NASA plan, Alibaba engineers are committed to developing a green and efficient data center solution, and successively introduced the deep lake water cooling data center with an annual average PUE of less than 1.3, and natural air cooling data with PUE below 1.25. Center, and today, the PUE of Alibaba "Kylin" is moving towards the theoretical limit of 1.0.
