College students invented sign language robots to enable hearing-impaired people to communicate

"I am the 'Joint One', and the weather is very good today!" Qin Qian, a student of the School of Traffic Engineering at Beijing Union University, just fell, a black and white robot dancing with both hands and sign language. This sign language robot was unveiled at the 8th "Challenge Cup" Capital University Students Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Competition Special Prize Prize Remarks, which became the focus.

The sign language robot "Joint No. 1" was designed by the team of college students. The robot is 135 cm tall and has a built-in control program for voice input. When people talk to the robot, the control program converts the voice into text and issues instructions according to the text, and the robot's arm produces the corresponding sign language according to the instruction.

The design team of the sign language robot consists of eight undergraduates, who are from different departments such as the National University of Biochemistry, the School of Transportation Engineering, and the School of Special Education. The design of the work was inspired by Yu Juntao of the Special Education Institute, a hearing impaired person. "There are more than 20 million hearing-impaired people in China. Because of the low popularity of sign language, they will encounter many difficulties in their lives." Yu Juntao expressed his original intention in designing robots. He looks forward to using sign language robots, even A healthy person who does not know sign language can also communicate smoothly with the hearing impaired.

In April of this year, Yu Juntao and his companions began to design and produce sign language robots. They repeatedly debugged and modified them, and tried to make robotic sign language accurate. The sign language "small" requires a thumb to touch the little finger. However, the robot hand made according to the ratio of the hand, the thumb does not touch the little finger. Yu Juntao and his friends re-created and installed them, turning the fingers of the robot into the same length and two to three centimeters longer than the human fingers. The modified robot overcomes the obstacles of movement and makes sign language movements clear and smooth.

Yu Juntao and his partners hope that sign language robots can be used in hospitals, railway stations, banks and other places to help the hearing impaired to enjoy a barrier-free social life. "At present, the cost of this robot is about 10,000 yuan. We will continue to study how to reduce manufacturing costs and create opportunities for the promotion of sign language robots," said team member Qin Gan.

It is reported that in this "Challenge Cup" capital university students extracurricular academic and scientific works competition, a total of 121 works were selected for the special prize defense, the results of the competition will be announced in the near future.
