ZeniMax Lion Opening Asks Oculus to Recoup $4 Billion from Baidu VR

The lawsuit of VR technology giant Oculus has been going on for several weeks. In court, Oculus denied having stolen the crucial code from ZeniMax. However, the final result still depends on the jury.

It is understood that the courtroom debate is now over. The jury will later determine whether Oculus chief technology John Carmack has stole the ZeniMax IP and brought it in when he joined Oculus in 2013. ZeniMax's request received a huge compensation of 4 billion U.S. dollars, of which 2 billion were for compensation and another 2 billion for punitive damages. Oculus executives may also be involved in this huge amount of commercial secret theft claims.

ZeniMax expects John Carmack, chief technology officer of Oculus, to pay $110 million, Palmer Luckey $260 million and former Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe $427 million.

However, Oculus does not seem to be very strong. ZeniMax claimed that Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus, had not built his Oculus Rift with his own technical knowledge without the help of Carmack. ZeniMax stated that Carmack had been working at ZeniMax until afterwards to Oculus. Luckey and Carmack created Rift's software using ZeniMax's Rage VR platform and Doom 3 BFG beta code.

ZeniMax Media is a world-renowned publisher of games, headquartered in northern Washington, DC. ZeniMax attorney Tony Sammi said in his closing statement, “We cannot allow this kind of behavior to happen in this seemingly decent country.”

Oculus contends that it and its parent company, Facebook, requested expert appraisals to prove that Oculus's code does not include the Rage VR platform and the Doom 3 BFG beta code.

In addition, Oculus employees proved that they did not see any of Carmack's source code, nor saw them develop their code independently.

During the trial, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified to Luckey, Carmack and former Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe. The lawsuit was first filed in 2014, and Facebook, Oculus, and other key individuals are proving their innocence. The jury may decide a certain time during the next week.
