Estimated at $4.5 billion, Magic Leap is now working overtime to create a hybrid real-world prototype and hopes to complete it before the board of directors next week. Business Insider just published a public photo of the first Magic Leap portable hybrid reality device provided by a source.
According to sources, the early prototype code was "PEQ0". PEQ is the code used by Magic Leap to describe the current prototype product. The source also revealed that the picture was taken in early January and Xiao Bing tried to contact Magic Leap to verify this information, but the company declined to comment.
The board of directors will see next week the PEQ prototype prepared by CEO Ronnie Arbowitz. The source said that the equipment at the time will look more complete and will use a belt pack instead of a backpack.
Abbevitz explained some of the content about the prototype development process in an e-mail sent to employees. This email was mainly to respond to industry doubts that Magic Leap could not miniaturize and commercialize products.
Abbewitz wrote in the December memo:
I used PEQ0b about a week ago. We have more cycles to finish (PEQ1-PEQ5), but it's great. In 2014, we were only in a small warehouse and we just started to develop the first WDx series. But we now have a running factory and PEQ system.
It is important that we have only one response.
Ignore all of this. Focus on what we are doing and we will provide a great product. This product will shock the world and affect the next few years.
The board of directors to be held next week will be seen as a milestone in product development and as an opportunity to prove that Magic Leap can miniaturize its technology and market it in a smaller form factor.
But if you look at the picture above, Magic Leap's prototype device seems to have a long way to go from being really portable and commercial.
Magic Leap has completed a financing of 1.39 billion U.S. dollars, with a valuation of 4.5 billion U.S. dollars. Investors include the Anderson Horowitz Foundation, Google, JP Morgan and Alibaba.
