Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. recently introduced the MAX77596, an ultra-low quiescent current step-down converter that provides regular power for small form factor USB Type-CTM devices.

The next generation of products uses a high data rate and enhanced power transfer capability USB Type-C port, which requires a low voltage power supply to power the Type-C controller. The MAX77596 can generate an always-on digital supply voltage (1.8V/3.3V/5.0V) from the 5V to 20V PD voltage range to power the controller. The MAX77596 step-down converter operates from a minimum of 3.5V and a maximum of 24V, and regulates the voltage from the traditional 5V USB supply to the PD 20V upper limit.
Portable devices such as tablets, notebooks, cameras, and drones can easily support Type-C under PD-powered conditions with the flexible MAX77596 power converter. In the past, customers had to compromise between input voltage range, quiescent current, and size when designing power supplies for USB Type-C controllers. The solution typically requires two chips: a low-voltage input linear regulator and a high-voltage input switching converter to cover the wide voltage range specified by the PD standard. The MAX77596 combines a wide input voltage range, low quiescent current, and a compact TDFN package to reduce design time and solution size compared to a two-chip solution.
The MAX77596 step-down converter provides three versions of the output voltage: a fixed 3.3V and 5V output and an adjustable output. The user can set the output voltage from 1V to 10V through a divider resistor. This converter supports up to 300mA DC load. The MAX77596 is highly reliable, providing short- and over-temperature protection, a 6.67ms internal soft-start to minimize input surge current, a proven current-mode control architecture, and an input voltage tolerance of up to 42V.
