The United States loses at least 1.5 million acres of arable land each year due to urbanization. To compensate for this land loss, AeroFarms has built an indoor vertical farm and has begun planning to build a 9th base in Newark, New Jersey, just one kilometer from Manhattan, New York. This will be the world's largest vertical farm, with a 70,000-square-foot facility that can produce 2 million pounds of food a year and save 95% of water compared to crops grown in ordinary fields.

AeroFarms has been using the aeroponic growth system since 2004 to address global food safety and environmental crises. AeroFarms said on the website: “This technology makes the harvest cycle shorter and the results more predictable. There are no food safety issues and less impact on the environment.” This large farm can produce millions of pounds of vegetables and Vanilla, and its yield is 75% higher than that of an outdoor farm of the same size. This advanced agricultural system does not cause problems such as soil erosion, pesticide problems, excessive water use, but also reduces carbon emissions and sometimes even avoids carbon emissions altogether.

The system uses a special LED lighting and climate control method to grow a wide variety of vegetables without the need for sunlight and soil. This unique light allows AeroFarms to control the size, shape, texture, color, taste and nutrition of green leafy vegetables. AeroFarms said they used aerosol cultivation to spray the roots of the plant (including nutrients, water and oxygen). This aerobic system is a closed-loop system that saves 95% of water compared to normal outdoor planting, saves 40% of the culture solution, and does not require pesticides.

After a year of construction, the facility is nearing completion and the company has opened up some of the areas that are ready for operation.

The company has also developed a patented product, a reusable cloth filter media for seeding, germination, growth and harvesting.

Each cloth medium is made of 24 recycled plastic bottles, which can be cleaned and disinfected after each harvest. The system also acts as a barrier between the spray and the plant, allowing the company to harvest clean, dry, and convenient products.

AeroFarms can grow more than 250 leafy plants with longer shelf life and safe control from seed to packaging.

The company's goal is not only to compensate for the reduction in cultivated land in the United States, but to help address the global food shortage. The World Bank predicts that the population will reach 9 billion by 2050, the food needed will increase by 50%, and climate change during this time period will reduce crop yield by 25%, which will cause the world's poorest regions.
