Study: Japan's Earthquake Global Technology Industry Hardware is Expected to Be Created for Six Months

After a major earthquake in Japan, researchers at America Merrill Lynch stated that it is estimated that global technology industry hardware will have to return to normal after another six months.

Daniel Heyler, head of Global Semiconductor Research Investment Bank, said that after the 9.0-magnitude earthquake on Friday (3/11) and the subsequent tragic tsunami attack, prompted manufacturers to re-examine the supply situation in Japan. It is necessary to seek external suppliers to assist in the supply of final parts. Some Japanese technology manufacturers suffered an earthquake this time. At the same time, power shortages and transportation disruptions also caused harm.

Heyler pointed out that post-disaster recovery may take up to one or two quarters, especially if some of the power and factories are to be resumed. However, judging from the current inventory supply situation, it should be possible to continue four to six weeks.

In all kinds of disasters, BT’s chip packaging needs have been particularly hard hit. Merrill Lynch believes that Japan's supply accounts for about 90% of the world's supply, and the local global top two suppliers have no longer received orders. In addition, in the technology industry, hardware manufacturers will also slow down the production of accessories.

In addition, the price of memory chips began to soar. Heyler said he did not expect DRAM supply crisis, because now there is enough supply chain. However, he estimated that NAND flash chips needed for digital cameras and smart phones will be considerably affected. The impact may result in the use of fewer chips for personal computers or electronic products, so that performance may be affected but it can be ensured on time.

As for the impact on end users, Merrill Lynch believes it is still too early to say. Heyler pointed out to reporters at the meeting that the road to Japan’s economic recovery is still turbulent and the process is far more complicated than one can imagine.

From a brighter point of view, many hardware material suppliers are located in the south of Japan and have not been affected during this earthquake in northern Tokyo. Other analysts also mentioned that shipments of semiconductor materials and touch panels will be suspended after the earthquake. As a result, China's Taiwanese consumer electronics manufacturers, which are high-tech manufacturing centers, are also extremely nervous about the shortage of supply in Japan.
