Recently, Tsinghua Tongfang announced that it will invest 3 billion yuan to build a comprehensive industrial base for high-brightness LED applications in Nantong, Jiangsu. This is another key step in the LED industry chain after Tsinghua Tongfang established LED chips and LCD TV LED backlight industrial bases in Beijing and Shenyang.

“The goal of Tsinghua Tongfang is to achieve the largest scale of LED chip production in China in 2011.” Lu Zhicheng, president of Tongfang Co., Ltd., said that Tsinghua Tongfang will strive to become the largest chip supplier in the country and the top three worldwide.

Pursue breakthrough in core links

China's LED lighting industry is in the blowout period, and many places (such as Guangdong, Jiangsu, Hubei, etc.) all regard the LED lighting industry as one of the pillars for the development of strategic emerging industries. However, the strength of China's LED lighting industry is downstream packaging. In the two key areas of the upstream epitaxial wafers and chips, the power is relatively weak.

Li Xinghua, director of the Guangdong Science and Technology Department, who is highly concerned with the development of the LED lighting industry, has repeatedly stressed that China’s LED industry has formed a strong technology and industry base in terms of packaging and application, but it is still relatively upstream in the industry chain, especially in the epitaxial chip segment. Weak, we must increase our independent innovation efforts and make breakthroughs in key and core technologies. Otherwise, it is very likely that it will once again fall into the price war and rely heavily on the two major drawbacks of key components. The upstream resources are controlled and the pricing initiative is lost.

Wang Lianghai, vice-president of Tongfang, told the reporter that Tongfang’s shares are based on the related technical strengths of the LED industry of Tsinghua University. At the same time, the well-known LED research institutions outside the United Nations, based on the digestion and absorption of advanced international technologies, have learned to include high through independent development, research, and introduction. The core technology of brightness blue-green light LED epitaxial wafer growth and chip preparation engineering has quickly gained the technical power in line with international standards.

It is understood that after the Nantong LED project with Tsinghua Tongfang’s investment of nearly 3 billion yuan will be completed, it will form an annual output of 1.92 million high-brightness blue-green LED epitaxial wafers, 2 million LED backlight modules, and 2 million LED LCD TVs. 1 million LCD TVs, 500,000 Blu-ray DVDs, 16 million LED lamps, and 9.6 million sets of wire and power board processing capacity.

"With the completion of Tsinghua Tongfang Nantong LED semiconductor base, it will change China's weak position in the field of high brightness, high power LED epitaxial wafers and chip production, which will help China to independently develop LED industry, and at the same time, it will promote raw materials, middle LED devices and Packaging, and the development of downstream LED applications." Wang Lianghai said.

Layout LED industry chain

China is almost on the same starting line with the developed countries in the LED industry, which also gives Chinese companies the opportunity to participate in global competition. According to the national “Semiconductor Lighting Energy-saving Industry Development Opinions” clearly stated goal, by 2015, key raw materials and more than 70% of the chips will be domesticated, and the upstream chip scale production enterprises will reach 3-5.

China's LED companies, such as Sanan Optoelectronics, Silan Micro, and other listed companies, adopt a development model that basically focuses on one link in the industry chain and become bigger and stronger, while Tsinghua Tongfang has chosen the whole industry chain development model. According to Wang Lianghai, at present, Tsinghua Tongfang has formed LED epitaxial wafers, chip manufacturing and packaging, production and application of terminal products, and completed industrial chain and large-scale production of urban landscape lighting, and has patents on LED epitaxy and chip manufacturing. item.

Because there are many patent issues in the technical links such as epitaxial wafers, chips, and packages, multinational giants such as Sem iLEDsCorporation in the United States, Lumileds in the Netherlands, etc. are building a huge patent pool, which threatens the long-term development of China's LED industry. In terms of patents, Tsinghua Tongfang cooperated with Lumileds of the Netherlands to resolve patent issues in European and American markets through cross-licensing. This also lays the foundation for Tsinghua Tongfang to go overseas.

Lu Zhicheng emphasized that with the construction of Nantong LED industry base, the LED industry layout of Tsinghua Tongfang has been basically completed. The realization of high-brightness, high-power LED epitaxial wafers and large-scale production of chips in China will help change the situation in which high-end products are monopolized by foreign countries, reduce production costs, and increase the international competitiveness of China's LED industry.
