Responding to ARM Renesas in Searching for a New Strategy for the Development of Microcontrollers

According to foreign media reports, in order to deal with ARM's competition in the embedded market, Renesas intends to unify the three high-end microcontroller series into one overall processor architecture.

Currently, Renesas has three 32-bit microcontroller families, namely the V850, SH and RX families.

“We are ready to create a new type of strategic model and we are studying how to unify it,” said Mr. Miki, chairman of Renesas Electronics Europe.

After the integration, a new 32-bit processor supporting the toolbox and IP ecosystem will help Renesas in the fierce competition between the embedded market and ARM.

Mr. Miki mentioned that Renesas' MCU Partner Program covers the toolbox, IP, and reference platform. At present, the program already has more than 700 members.

He said frankly: "We are very much in agreement with ARM's ecosystem, because the integration of semiconductor devices through the ecosystem will be the next phase of semiconductor business development."

Mr. Miki also revealed that Renesas decided to skip 65nm and go directly to the 40nm process. He believes that this decision will make Renesas a force in mid-2012.
