DOE's third round of $7.1 million supports Cree and other three companies' LED R&D projects

Recently, the US Department of Energy (DOE) announced that it will provide a $7.1 million fund as part of the latest SSL manufacturing R&D program, which will be used in three R&D projects for SSL manufacturing, with a focus on significantly reducing costs while maintaining quality, Improve production equipment, processes and monitoring technologies.

Cree, based in Durham, North Carolina, has acquired a project with the goal of developing an optimized LED luminaire that can be easily integrated into buildings and outdoor applications with less raw materials. The goal of the project is to reduce overall manufacturing costs without sacrificing lighting performance. Cree received an additional $5 million.

Another project beneficiary is KLA TENCOR, based in Milpitas, Calif., which will be used to improve the development of high-precision thermal testing tools for detecting LED color consistency in LED manufacturing.

The third project, k-Space, Dexter, Mich., will be used to develop tools for measuring OLED layers with high precision in the company's existing optical monitoring methods, measuring thickness and composition, and providing production-grade Control the efficiency, color and lifetime of the OLED.
